Trey and Samantha (and Mommy & Daddy) are making all sorts of adjustments to our four-legged addition! Among them, frequent walks outside, throwing the tennis ball again and again and again, brushing his fur and some of us are even pulling up carpet to make way for dog friendly flooring. We have all made room in our hearts for Oz, even and especially Samantha.
Samantha has really become quite taken with dogs these days. Her recent art project was all about dogs!
On our first trip to the vet, all four of us, I mean, all five of us, went to meet Dr. Ade. He confirmed Oz is a lab-shar pei mix, and the shar pei is very evident in the shape of his head and ears. Despite being more than 30 pounds, Oz is not quite 5 months old. A small, red kong--a favorite chew toy of Oz-- went missing recently...we wondered if he swallowed it. The x-ray was inconclusive because plastic toys do not really show up. We did however discover several b b pellets in his body. This news was heartbreaking to all of us, but also made us even more committed to giving him the best home we can. The good news is that the bb's are not putting him in any danger, and Oz is doing well.
We are exploring different puppy training programs (really "puppy owner" training). One approach we are learning about is through Blowing Springs and Roddy Dogs. In nature, there is not any animal that uses treats to train their young, and this program builds on this premise. If you are interested, you can learn more at: http://www.blowingsprings.com/
